One should not poo-poo the science ... its used in many types of filtration
systems (human too!)

US NIH - Virus Removal in Water
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC183610/

NIH - Lowers blood cholesterol (more studies needed)
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9533930

USDA (excerpt) toxicity increase 16 & 17 fold in killing larval staged red
flour beetles
http://tinyurl.com/usda-redbeetle (will open in google docs)

As example.. that last one ... it didn't seem to do much to the adult
beetles ... it just caused the young beetles to be more vulnerable and thus
have (upto) a 17 times greater mortality with beauveria bassiana (a common
fungus)

Another USDA
http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/publications.htm?seq_no_115=23
1508

... Moreover, mortality increased with increasing exposure time ...
... Progeny production after 30 d was significantly suppressed for all
species in the treated grains...

So.. there's lots of science stating they see results ... it HAS also been
used to help control and eventually eradicate infestations of fleas & ticks
for the very same reasons outlined in the USDA links (both) above.
