This happened to my husband on more than one occaision with Lucy.
We got Lucy when Paul was still in grad school. Since he didn't need to be at work
in the morning, he was in charge of Lucy. He was also still used to labs and let
Lucy walk off lead. There were abandoned railroad tracks behind our apartment and
every morning they would set off on an adventure. When it was cold, Lucy would
just turn around when she'd had enough walk and head home. The first time it
happened Paul ran all the way home calling for her, only to find her sitting in
front of our door patiently waiting. I really miss my girl.

"I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I
am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much
in loving a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if
they were to live double that time?â Sir Walter Scott
