I agree. My mom got a Dyson when they were still in their old house (lots of carpet) and loved it. Now that they're in Florida with all tile floors, she hates it. Says it doesn't pick up with a darn. I have laminate and tile floors in most of my house, plus carpet in the bedrooms. I have a Kenmore canister vac from Sears (it uses a bag). It might not be enough for a large house with multiple dogs, but for my tiny space and single hound, it's great. And it was less than $125.

What is the Drooler opinion on the Dyson line?
 
Short Reply -- If you have carpet, get a Dyson, they're unbelievable on
carpet.  If you have hardwood/tile/hard surface floors, then Dyson is
good, but not that much better than some of the others.  I have carpet and
bought a Dyson about 3 years ago, it’s worth the money.
