[Dailydrool] anal gland problems

I have a 4 year old rescue Bassett who cannot empty his anal glands.   
I have tried gradually changing his food to a more natural and high  
fiber food and he throws it up.  He is currently on Purina One for
Sensetive System, with 1/2 cup of green beans or organic pumpkin.  I  
am having to take him to the vet monthly for an anal expression.  It  
is uncomfortable for him and also expensive.  I would learn to do it  
myself,
but am afraid he will bite.   Any suggestions?  This is my first  
Bassett Hound and I am learning every day more about his breed.
