  I just asked my vet this question on Saturday.  One of my dogs really 
attracts deer flies.  At first the vet recommended Advantix because it 
repels flies and mosquitoes.  The ingredient that does this is 
pyrethrin.  I also have two cats.  When I mentioned that, he said not to 
use Advantix because pyrethrin can be deadly to cats if they groom your 
dogs. My cats curl up with my dogs to sleep and occasionally groom them 
so advatix is definitely out.
