[Dailydrool] Staff & Strep & E coli- Oh My!

Sooooo, after Copper’s mouth got all smelly last week (thanks for all the
great advice everyone sent!), it was clear he was going to need to see the
vet sooner rather than later. She squeezed us in last Friday morning when I
called saying that the skin under his legpits had flared up red and angry
over night to add to everything else.

$690 later, we’d had blood tests, cytology (ear and lip-fold), a
power-washer bath with medicated shampoo, and a bag with oral Baytril, oral
Ketoconazole, Baytril Otic for the ears, and a medicated wash for the lips
and leg-pits. He did look like a million bucks (or almost $700), having not
only gotten bathed but deep ear cleaning, toebone clipping, and anal-gland
expressing. He was also remarkably chipper when I picked him up considering
he’d been at the vet’s office all day.

The first of the bad news we got was on Friday though, when the vet informed
me that he has a pea sized growth in one of his anal sacs. She said there
was a possibility it was benign, but that it was only about a 25%
possibility, but that it was too deep to do a needle biopsy, so we would
have to put him under and have it completely removed to biopsy it. We both
agreed that at pushing 14, he really doesn’t need to go through that, unless
it becomes a quality of life issue that can be corrected with the surgery. For
now we will just watch it closely and see how it does.

The next bad news came today when the results of the ear cytology came back.
He has four, yes FOUR types of bacteria growing in his ears, Strep, Staff,
Enterococcus and E coli! The Baytril otic will work on all but the E coli,
so he goes back next Friday for a new ear wash, a flushing solution for us
to take home, more of the Baytril Otic, and something specific to get the E
coli.

What amazed me is that I clean his ears twice a week, and put a drying agent
in them! He STILL managed to get four bacteria to grow in there! So, we
could use a little drool if there is any to spare, and possibly the number
of a good loan shark to cover the vet bills! Lol

Drool to all who need it.

these ears!)
