[Dailydrool] Tracking "Troubles"

I suspect Gallagher is a natural tracker. When he picks up a scent (deer, rabbit, squirrel etc.), his nose is to the ground and the body just better follow. He flips back and forth with nose to the ground. He'll spring into tracking mode, even on leash, tail wagging the whole time. The only problem - - - he has VERY long ears. It's not unusual for him to do the sniff, sniff, step on ears and somersault.
He was doing his tracking sniff the other day on the sidewalk. There's a gentle curb from the sidewalk to the street that he usually walks down. Except this time some fun scent must have been there and he wasn't paying attention (and neither was I - he was on leash). He stepped on his ear, puncturing it with a claw (not all the way through, but nasty none the less). This caused his head to turn sharply and he banged his face on the pavement, as he slid. He ended up with a "shiner" (doggy version anyway - with very swollen eyebrow), a cut on his lip and the "hole" in his ear. We didn't realize how bad it was until the next morning. He managed to get it infected! The vet put him on antibiotics and we had to put warm compresses on his face. He's healing up nicely, but what a sight.
