Maureen:
Welcome to the Daily Drool. This is a great place to learn about bassets and
their many quirks.
For Henry's pulling, I would recommend that you get a head halter. You
should be able to buy one online or at any well-stocked pet store. It goes
over the dog's head and muzzle and gives you control of the dog's head, so
it cannot pull as much. Essentially, when he pulls, his head turns toward
you.
The first time you put in on Henry, he may balk. But be persistent. After a
while he will get used to it, even if it's never his favorite thing. But it
can become your favorite thing, since it reduces the pulling.
The brand I bought (which escapes me at the moment, unfortunately) sometimes
seems to slip off the dog's head. To solve this, when I clip the leash on
the head harness, I also attach it to the collar. Then it does not go
anywhere and I do not have to worry about my hound escaping.
