I will never forget talking to a fairly well-educated man I worked for and 
telling him about all the efforts the specialist had made to keep our cat 
Tuck alive. Unhappily, it was all in vain, and we had to put Tuck to sleep. 
I expected a little sympathy perhaps, not the response I got, which was, "Do 
you have to pay for that?" I was stunned, just stunned. Why would I think a 
veterinary internist would work for free?

It's not just basset people or the ill-educated who come up with these 
things. I always wondered, if this man's mother died, would he expect not to 
have to pay the doctor?
