It is necessary to have speed bumps in your house, especially in the kitchen
when you are moving something hot and wet from the stove to, let us say, the
sink. Part of the Basset Pledge is that they are to make sure you are never
in such a hurry that you forget they are there.
They may also remind you that they are there by standing up just as you step
over them, and moving slightly so that there is no way to put your airbourne
foot down without stepping on a vital hound part.
Common sense would seem to dictate that the Basset move out of the way, but
usually there is no reward for this, whereas if you are prone on the floor,
sidewalk, intersection or stairway the biscuits that they know for a fact
that you always carry, may fall out of your pocket. At any rate it gives
them a chance to show you the world from their perspective.
Yes, Greyhounds and Belgian Sheepdogs move out of the way and do it quickly
and with grace, but this is not the way of the Basset Tribe.
In otherwords, get used to it. No, there is no way to teach them to move.

MomPerson to Nigel, Llewis, Conley (Speed Bumps 1, 2 and 3) and Cooper (out
of the way and offering to help.)
