You should follow the instructions exactly.  Variations on the instructions can mean loss of effectiveness.

I would also continue other training and sound desensitization.

If you have young dogs, the second the storm comes, put the dog out in a covered area and when the thunder strikes, throw a huge handful of yummy cookies out~  Then bring them in after they eat them.
