About 3 years ago our neighbor at the foot of our driveway, came home with a puppy and a basset hound. Being nosey as always about dogs and hounds i walked across the road and ask him the story behind his new dogs.. this is what i found out..
The puppy was running down the highway almost being run over before neighbor could grab her off the road.. as he was stoped beside road another pickup truck stoped behind him and the guy driving it told him, "Hey! I see you like dogs! Well i got one here in back of my truck i was taking to the pound, you want him ??" My neighbor, who has a huge heart and a sucker for sob stories came home with a puppy and a elderly basset...
Enter me, nosey neighbor... DUDE! where you get the basset? He says- a guy gave him to me, i dont want nor need him but i just could not let that man take him to the pound, look at that face!!
Then i look at that face.. and I was lost too... But being a truck driver and gone every week i couldnt take him.. But neighbor and I made a deal.. My husband is due to retire in aug of 2011.. If Buster was still around then we were to take him home and let him live out his life with retired hubby.. good deal...
But our good neighbor died suddenly from Cancer.. No one but him knew he was sick.. he never said.. but just one day shortly before he died he called me over and ask me.."Hey, you still want ole Buster ?" and i say sure we do .. he said great then he is yours, I am leaving him to you in my will.." and I thinks ok.. He had a care giver living with him and his folks..both his mom and dad has Alzheimers.. He was caring for them at his home.. then he died suddenly..
Now his uncle has power over the estate and says all dogs must go.. or they are going to the dog pound.. we dont have a no kill shelter here in our county...SO Busters fate was in my hands..
MY girlfriend and her husband came down this past weekend..they have seven dogs.. large and small all rescues, and they also have our ZERO who lives with them and Zeros sister Freckles..
Most of you know Zeros story.. she cant ride on the big truck because of car sickness, and we refused to keep her on meds..so she lives with her 2momma and 2daddy Fran and Charlie with her sister Freck...and other asorted dogs..pluse cats as well...anyway getting back to Buster...
I tell Fran and Charlie of Busters plite.. they look at each other and nod, and Fran says lets go get Buster..
We did.. I walked him back home, he came with me with wagging tail, we stoped along the way to sniff and watch a baby rabbit hop along in front of us, then he tried to lift his leg to do the Pee thing and bless his heart he topled over on his butt.. He looked up at me, and I had the good grace to look away, he stood up and sighed loudly, then walked over to me proped his left hip on my leg and thankfully lifted his right leg and made his bathroom on all threes with the help of my leg.. then he lead the way up my drive way to our house.. and was given the basset welcome!
The girls started baying and aarroooing and was acting like he was a long lost brother returning from the war.. Buster was welcomed into the back yard with sniffs and kisses all over his face, tails wagging so hard! Even the other resscue dog welcomed him, no fussing at all.. Buster walked up the ramp and stood at the back door looking up at me.. remember now for three years he had been outside dog. no one to love him only feed and water him..
I opened the back door and stood back.. Everyone rushed inside at once baying and running the basset 500 in the den.. TV time was put on hold until the family settled down..
Buster walked up to my husband, who everyone knows is the alpha hound of the pack.. He sat in front of my husband and just looked at him.. Husband looks back.. they NOD at each other and Buster lays on a blanket near husbands chair..
Fran and Charlie tell Buster, "You will never be cold or to hot, you will never be hungry nor will anyone ever hurt or hit you again for the rest of your life, welcome home Buster!"
They left for home the next day, calling three hours later telling us that all went well on the trip, and Buster was again welcomed with open paws and lavished with kisses and komo even offered Buster his favorite toy..
Buster acts like he has lived with them forever, Fran says he slept all night, no crying or winning.. and I told her, He knows he is home now...
We just wanted to share a good story with a happy ending..
Hubby better watch out when he does retire.. lets see, we need a bigger back yard, more dog houses, how much is fence and post these days???
Drool to all in need.. Prayers for the slaves..
and GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS
