[Dailydrool] Back Surgery

I am a total lurker, living vicariously with bassets through everyone's stories and sorrows -- and yes, I cry over every hound and wannabe that goes to the bridge.

The subject of back surgery, however, prompted me to jump in. EVERY back surgery (on humans) is different. I had major thoracic spine fusion 30 years ago, had moderate pain for a couple of months, and then 25 YEARS of near painlessness. Yes, now the arthritis has set in and my back is "older" than some other parts of my body, but I'm mighty grateful for those 25 years. My pain is controlled, mostly, with mild meds and physical therapy and I am still fairly active, bicycling being my primary source of exercise. And yes, walking doesn't feel so good (but I would do it if I HAD a basset, which I cannot).

I can only imagine that back surgery for dogs also varies with the dog and the type of surgery. And since I do not have my own basset I will not attempt to give advice beyond my own personal experience. I do, however, wish that Dayna could get some relief and will be sending good thoughts her way (sorry, no drool in my house).
