You might try chlorpheniramine Maleate (4 mg) instead of the Benadryl. Frank the Tank had a Hot Spot problem from constant itching/licking, and his breeder suggested it as something to try. We gave him a pill twice a day and after about 3-4 days, he was much better. I bought generic at CVS, and it also goes by the big brand name of Chlor-Trimeton. She said you can give up to 4 times a day in severe cases; twice a day helped Frank.

We had been giving him Benadryl, and that didn't seem to be doing anything this time, except making him sleepy....
