Oh Nancy, I laughed out loud at your post -- I love the way you  write!  
And I love your boys.  Would have loved to have seen all four  jammed in the 
dog door.
 
But I think you neglected to read the small print on the Basset Security  
System contract.  The four models that you had installed are guaranteed to  
stop intruders by tripping them.  Anyone who breaks into your house has a  
really good chance of tripping over a sleeping basset, crashing to the floor,  
and alerting you in your sleep.  The speedbumps (who probably would have  
slept through the entire episode, thus remaining fresh for the next time 
they're  needed) would therefore have fulfilled their jobs as spelled out in the 
security  contract.
