Imagine. There is an article on dog poop disposal on the front page of this 
weekend's Wall Street Journal (Weekend edition: 4/30-5/1/11). The article is 
actually about a growing business in dog-waste removal services and businesses, 
but contains a plethora of interesting facts.

For example, the U.S. pet dog population has more than tripled since 1960. In 
2010 the United States dog population was estimated at 78.2 million. Only cattle 
and cats outnumber dogs among American domesticated mammals.

On average, a dog poops about three quarters of a pound daily, amounting to 274 
pounds a year per dog (or 10.9 million tons total yearly per all dogs total in 
the U.S.).

The pet waste removal company featured (in Long Island, NY), charges $12 for a 
once a week pickup for one dog, $21 for twice a week pickup for two dogs.

Dog waste removal companies favor funny company names: Dr. Scoopy Poo; Dog 
Entremanure; Yucko's; Grand Poobah; Call of Doodie; and the featured company, 
Mine Sweepers Pet Waste Removal. At the current time, the newspaper is aware of 
500 small independent companies and three national franchisers--Pet Butler, 
Doody Calls (Charlottesville, Va.) and Poop 911. 


Last year pet waste disposal companies had their own convention, during which a 
golden shovel trophy was awarded to the person able to collect the most fake 
droppings in the least amount of time. The contest at the convention was called 
"The Scooper Bowl".

I would bet that bassets exceed the average poop weight and quantity daily, and 
that Daphneyland would win a prize in the tonnage per location category.
