With the exception of the first month of basset heaven and a month after Sherlock died, we have always had at least 2 bassets. When we got Sassy, the first one, she was such a tiny thing and she HATED being by herself. She loved her peeps but she needed a furry friend. So we made the trek back to the breeder to get the sister that I wanted in the first place. We came home with Daisy and life was never the same. I wish we had also gotten the other sister, Spotty, but we had our hands full with two. Sassy would not eat anything and Daisy ate everything. She was twice the size of Sassy at 12 weeks. I cooked for these dogs. Daisy was a little piggie. She ate hers and Sassy's too so we had to hold her back and push Sassy to her bowl. Eventually, Sassy became the dominant girl. She was the runt of the litter and the breeder told us not to take her because she would be a pill. She was. Sassy would poke and bite at Daisy all the time. She would pester and bug her until Daisy had had enough. Then the fight would begin. Daisy was a quiet, shy girl but she would only take so much from her sis. They would really go at each other. We would pull them apart and hold on tol them until the fury died down. But if there was only one human round there was no separating them. We finally gave in and let them fight it out. Sometimes and ear would be pierced but usually, they would get over it and be best buds again. They couldn't live without each other. Daisy died in December and Sassy lived until the following June. They were 12 and 13 when they died. They were the best girls anyone could ask for. I miss them every day.

When Daisy died, we got Sherlock, also a puppy. Didn't know much about rescue then. Sherlock was a mess. He was nobody's example of a quality hound. But, he was a really sweet boy. He was the world's biggest wuss. He loved, loved, loved Sassy but she was too old to care. She pretty much hated him. Sassy lived only a couple of months after we got Sherly. Then------In July of that year, we found Sunny. She was our first rescue. I have to say that as an example of a rescue dog, she was a bad one. Sunny was meaner than a rattlesnake. Someone with big tennis shoes and white clothes must have hurt her because she never got over her hatred of tennis shoes or feet in general and white. She was also an enemy of anything that looked like a broom. She was a beautiful girl and we loved her as much as we could. She didn't like Sherlock much. I think she worried him into an early grave. He was younger than her by several years but was almost completely white when he died. She was the boss lady of everything. After Sherlock died we found Ninja.

For some reason, they left each other alone mostly. Ninja can be little miss snippy so maybe Sunny didn't want to push it. We found Marley not long after we got Ninja. Marley was the terror of her apartment and they couldn't stand her. She has never been a terror here. She is mouthy and crabby but a good girl. She and NInja get along and even play at times. Maggie is our play girl. She is still a puppy at heart. I still don't quite know how we managed to end up with four basset girls. Sunny left for the bridge and eventually we found Shelby or she found us. Ninja really snarks at her a lot. Shelby just wanders around and is pretty oblivious.

I think they get along fairly well for being girls. Ninja is the queen. She is also the diva, the alpha and the Empress. Right now she is peeved because Maggie is asleep with her back feet on me. I'm not sure we will always have four bassets but for now, it is fine. The going in and out is a pain and I do wish we had a dog door. Now that I have over expounded on my dogs, I will get off the computer. The animals are all asleep. I need to be. Maggie is asleep on her back next to me, snoring rather loudly. Her beautiful spotted tummy is just begging to be rubbed.

We are sending lots of warm sleepy drool to anyone in need.
