I would get her to the vet asap--sounds like a possible infection--maybe in
an anal gland. If not that, then if it has any odor, it is something that
should be checked out.

I found the best solution for Eugene is to wear a regular nylon collar with a boomerang tag on it ( thanks Bev for suggesting those!) that has his name, our phone number and my anal message " if alone, I'm lost" engraved on it and then always use a harness for his walks, outdoor excursions. Somewhere I read that putting pressure on the neck with a leash attached to a collar isn't good for the basset anatomy so this works well for us. Since Eugene is never crated I don't worry that his collar will get stuck on something in his crate while we are out. I have the peace of mind of knowing that he is always wearing his id--plus he looks very handsome in his red collar!!! Georgia and Eugene

I've been MIA for a long time but reading my digests and had to chime in.
Being the romantic that I am, my favoritest names for a pair ever are Lizzy
and Mr. Darcy. And one more that has not been mentioned that was just
perfectimondo in the naming department was Polly Esther (Ester?) - what a
classic! It's inspiring, really. I know of no other breed that shows such
creativity!

The last nail on both of Lilie's back paws curves in at a sharp angle. It
means that she gets her nails cut more often than usual because it curves
right into her pad and I don't want her to hurt.

One night I got up for a drink of water to find that she had gotten one of
her nails caught in the ring of the collar and couldn't get her leg free. I
took off the collar and never put it back on. I use a martingale collar
when we go out but it comes off as soon as we get home. No collars in the
house.

I was also worried that she and Daffodil might someday get into a fight and
the collars would be a problem of some sort.

Katie, Lilie and Daffodil

Tri-State has a 5 month old little girl (named Babygirl) with a serious eye
issue that will need surgery in the near future. It is painful for her as well
as unsightly. She is also recovering from pneumonia after being thrown away by
some heartless people and was found wandering. I have put a couple of items on
Houndsbay to help with her medical bills. The first item is a set of The
People's Choice videos in VHS format (viewed once) and the second item is a set
of The People's Choice videos in DVD format (NEW).

Also, Moon Doggie Coffee will donate 30% of all sales (coffee, tea, Zephyr's
Bakery Treats) through August 21 to Babygirl's medical bills as well. Just go
to www.moondoggiecoffee.com <http://www.moondoggiecoffee.com/> , place your
order and put "BABYGIRL" in the comments section. Order our newest flavor -
TWINKIES!!! Great hot and wonderful iced!!!

Won't you please help Babygirl?

Thank you,

Donna Funk

It has been quite interesting having a buppy in the house for the past few
days. Ty is just a joy to have around. He's a little playing machine and is
relentless! So far, Ginger hasn't tried to eat him or hurt him but I have a
feeling that it's only a matter of time before she's had enough of him. I
caught him thinking about chewing one of the bannisters on the stairs and an
electrical cord near our bed but he's mainly chewing the Houndettes toys up.
Ty is super good about going into the crate at bedtime and when I need to
leave the house. We initially had him sleeping in our bedroom but he's much
more content in his crate in the family room where the Houndettes all sleep.

Ty and I went to visit our vet the other day and the verdict is what I
expected. He does have some hip dysplasia, he has a luxating patella but it
may get better (or worse) as he gets older and he gave me multiple possible
diagnosis' for the limp on his front leg but we need to do x-rays before we
know for sure what is going on. So the boy is going to get some good drugs
to put him completely out on Thursday and we will know for sure what is
going on with his leg when we're done. I'm still hoping for something simple
but we don't seem to have that kind of luck.

BaRCSE just took in another buppy the other day. Thank doG for wonderful
volunteers and vets! Diane got Jasper to his foster home after he was
neutered and, when she opened up the door to get him out, she found that
he'd had bright red diarrhea all over the back end of her car. So she and D
zoomed back to the vets (who stayed well after closing to see this little
guy) and found out he had a probable viral intestinal bug. No Parvo though
(again, thank doG!). So Jasper is recovering at nurse D's for the weekend
who will make sure he's well before she sends him on to his permanent foster
home. Here is a video of the little guy playing with her rotty, Thea:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ5EJ1KTwtk I wish I could give our Ginger
Thea's personality! She is so good with all the hounds that D brings into
her home! I don't think that this little guy will be with us for very long!
He's just a cutie!

Please sling some drool in my Ty's direction on Thursday. BaRCSE just
doesn't have the money for a big orthopedic surgery for this sweet boy.

Yesterday I went to the pet store to pick up some treats...and came home with an overnight guest--an adolescent pitbull/catahoula hound mix whose foster arrangements had fallen through for the night (the local non-kill shelter was having an adoption event there yesterday and this afternoon).
?
Oh my heavens--I am so grateful for my basset boys. "Lupe" is an adorable, sweet dog--housetrained, friendly--but VERY active and into everything! She has not brought out the best in any of my housemates. Bo has been hiding in the bedroom. Harley is doing his best imitation of King Midas sitting on his gold. He has his toys and deer antlers stacked up underneath him on his bed and he is settled over the top of them like a chicken hatching eggs. Still, Lupe has discovered a great game--pulling out one toy and running. Harley chases her to get it back--she drops it and goes back to his stash to take another. They are both super sweet dogs and there has been no fighting, but Harley looks totally miserable. When not raiding Harley's stash, Lupe is searching out slippers and stuffies to destroy--also my quilting supplies, and she loves shredding papers. My husband is a clutterbug, so there are lots of these around. I've been out on the lawn with Lupe to give
everyone a break, but then my absent-minded husband opens the gate and doesn't look behind him so it is chase around the neighborhood. Both my husband and Harley have been asking me, "How long til she goes back to find her forever home?" (2 hours and counting now). I am afraid to take a shower this morning because I'd have to take my eyes off Lupe for five minutes. lol. I hope Lupe finds an ACTIVE home this afternoon! Give me a senior basset hound any day. I applaud those of you with OEBE puppies. How on earth do you manage? Val

Dear Pw. Rolph-

I like all your fancy titles! I have a fancy name, Jamboree's A Piece of Cake, after my dearly depawted momcakes, Jamboree's Black Forest Cake......but from day one, I've been Pawtunia. Pw. Pawtunia, Queen Pawtunia, Pawtuniamom to the puppers. Auntie Paws to the Nephews, Auntie Pawtunia, Cousin Pawtunia.......(Occasionally mispelled Petunia)? Thanks very much to those who like my name! (Thanks for my dearly depawted adopted Uncle Woo <*>, too!)

Of course you can still be OEBE. Pw. Wendell Bottom never had to surrender his OEBE!

I am sorry, I can not dub you a knight....you being British and all, I think that might fall to a different Queen!

Pawtunia, whatever ya want to call me......

Hmmmmn. I think I agree with Auntie Melissa that All of Her Wendell Hound was a favorite. My slaves met her, once......? Nick, as in Father Xmas was a very fine name that worked his way into the lexicon.....loved da Moose...but the slave's favorite is probably a hound she only met once, in Allentown. HOOVER.

The she slave would like to post her LEAST favorite name, but can't figure out how to do it wifout insulting a very fine houndie who had it and she loved, and many fine others who got the same moniker, but she HATES names where ya might as well put?a number after it.....thinking Auntie Dawn of the West telling her about XXXX- 42. So many they number the hounds with that name.

We are owned by nine-year-old Merriman's Bone-Idle Onslow, also named for sloppy but loveable Onslow on "Keeping Up Appearances" to which we are quite addicted.? Many years ago, we walked into the groomer's at PetSmart to hear the young lady say instantly "Here I sit, surrounded by no biscuits" and knew we live in a literate and civilised community!? After a succession of sweet boys rescued from Carolina Basset Hound Rescue, we this year fell in love with our first lady, named by her foster "Danika".? It took us about four minutes on the way home with her?to realise we could keep the initial sound and finally have our Daisy!? Since her markings and copious freckles remind us of our lovely Louie (ATB) she is fully titled "Daisylu".? The two hounds relate much like the human versions, and they are both much loved....

We have adopted a basset girl from Washington Basset Rescue formerly
named Lily, now she is little Lady,
She is 18 months old and a tri color, she is playing well with Pete and
Harley D, she should settle right in.
We have been struggling with Penelope for around 6 months now,
I have never failed an adoption before, but Penner has decided she wants
to be an only houndie,
This has been a trying time for us, we have tried every trick in the
book to help her adjust, but it wasn't meant to be.
Aunt Pat is going to find her a home where she can be the only houndie,
not fighting over food, affection, laps or anything else.
This broke our hearts, but it is in the best interest of all the
houndies, as our smooshy boy Pete was being absolutely run down and run
over, so to speak.
Little Lady will never have to worry about being tied up outside, or
never having enough affection, or not having a warm or cool house to go
into, she is playing with her brothers, with their toys, and learning
the house,
Thanks again Aunt Pat, we love you.
Tammara,
with Harley D, Pete and Lady,

Iffin only I could live long enough, be rich enough, be crazy enuf, I would love at least 42 Pierre dogs. Maybe not all at the same time, but I hope there will be a 3rd or a 4th in the family.
My friend who rescued from BHRA two years ago had lost her Ginger. On the ride home from the transport, Patty's Mom decided the new hound was going to be Ginger as well. Some names bear repeating.
Side note, Victoria Stilwell was at Doggie U, where Pierre trains, but the filming occurred when I was distracted with Mom issues. If you follow her, and if you see Doggie U, well, that is where jr. trains.
One last note, if you ever get a chance to bid on a wood burning done by Dawn, bid high. Her art is absolutely marvelous, and if you have a person in the house that thinks it is a utility piece, hang it up right away, I did. No food products touched my board. It is true and beautiful art.
Healing drool to all in need.
Jax and the herd
