Dear Daily Drool Owner,

My name is Christin and I am the proud slave of Sidney the seven year old
basset hound. (We may have met at the Basset Hound Picnic in Raritan NJ a
few years back) I absolutely love and adore my Sidney. He is a part of my
family. I am familiar with the breed as I grew up with three other Basset
Hounds as a child. I am committed to being his slave until he crosses the
bridge and leaves me. However, we are having some difficult problems and I
need some help. I am going to give you the history so you can best advise
me. Sidney came into my life by interesting means. I despise pet stores
and puppy mills and make it a point to avoid deals with them. However,
during a trip to a mall with a girlfriend of mine seven years ago, she
decided she needed fish food so we were in the store and the sweet Basset
Hound puppy being passed between the manager and a woman caught my
attention. No matter what the store manager said the woman insisted on
calling the dog a beagle. It was freezing out side and she continued to
repeat he won't need a dog house I can just put him outside in a run. The
little guy was coughing pretty bad. I knew if he went home with the woman
he would be dead in a few days. When she went to get money from the mac
machine I walked up to the manager an purchased Sidney before she could come
back for him. It took me the first six months of Sidney's life to
straighten out his health. I found out the same day he was welped he was
put on a truck in South Dakota only to appear in the pet shop a week later.
He had phenmonia, Kennel cough and all kinds of parasites. We managed to
get him healthy. I took Sid to obedience school and I socialized him a
great deal when he was young. He has had three eye surgeries because he is
prone to eye tumors and he has numerous ear infections. All of which we
have addressed and will continue to address. Sidney, goes from 6 am to 6pm
with out making a mess in the house. Unfortunately, my first problem is
that once I come home we have to go out side every fifteen minutes for him
to urinate and he is still having accidents in the house. I was forced to
have him sleep in a crate because he would urinate up to three times over
night. He seems happy with sleeping in the crate. Recently, even when I
take him out every fifteen minutes he is still urninating in the house in
between. I checked with vet and he does not have a bladder infection or
anything like that. I try to limit his water intake at night. I am
wondering if you are aware of where I could buy a diaper for a basset. I
have tried our local pet shops and they sizes just do not fit a Basset Hound
torso. I want him to have the time to socialize with my family as he is
alone all day, but the accidents are really getting out of hand. In
addition to this problem. Sidney is over protective of my son and I. If
someone walks buy on the street or comes to my home with out me knowing
ahead of time- Sidney can be down right aggressive. Barking, growling and
even lunging to bite people. I do not ever want Sidney to have to be put
down for biting someone as he truly is a sweet dog. He is only acting
because he is trying to be protective. If I tell the unexpected guest to
stay perfectly still he will carry on a bit smell them and then be their
best friend. However, if they do not listen and continue to move the
situtation can be dangerous for the person and Sidney. I am wondering if
you have any suggestions. I love my dog and want him to live a long healthy
life. Any ideas you have or your other readers have would so greatly be
appreciated.

Sincerely,

Christin
