Be careful with small stone.  Some bassets eat it and end up having surgery or worse.

I like the new faux grass personally.

But we use straw for most of our yards in the winter months.

My wife & I are going to be having our small backyard totally redone. Our 
etaining walls are collapsing and our bassets have torn
p the grass, worn our the lawn perimeter, and dug deep holes in our bark mulch. 
e are going to have about a third of our yard
overed in patio stones. We are thinking of having the perimeter in small river 
ock. The remainder will likely be some hardy type
f grass.
We'd like to hear from other Droolers for successful ideas for ground cover for 
ards with basset hounds.
