[Dailydrool] Enjoy what you have while you have it

Bev said it best when she was talking about Mitchell. It made me think about
my dogs. Our Homer aka Homer ob da West is dying from cancer, a
hemangiosarcoma to be exact. We've know about it now for since mid March. My
vet is amazed that he is still here. She thought he would be gone a few
weeks after the diagnosis. He is approximately 10 yrs old. We opted for no
chemo or surgery due to his age, having kidney issues and a heart murmur. I
wanted his last days to be free of all the pain of surgery and the rigors of
chemo. He has done very well, he's lost some weight as he is a picky eater
and always has been but we give him what he wants now. He loves his chicken
breasts, pnut butter, cottage cheese and some treats. He is fading and it
scares the hell out of me at what a huge hole he will leave when he is gone.
He's one of those dogs that has such a huge presence in the house, he runs
the show, woofles at everything, and I do mean everything! He makes sure
that everybody has enough treats to eat, especially him. He rides herd on
the kitties and makes sure they behave (!!), secretly they are not impressed
with this supervision but they never let him know that. A year after we
rescued him we got Bob. It went better than we could have ever hoped for or
dreamed. They are inseparable. Homer sleeps next to Bob on the dog bed and
actually lays in front of him like he is protecting him from any danger. He
is my protector and has no problems making sure strange people know that.
Nobody gets next to the Momperson without him knowing about it.
We got Zoe last September and she is a character in her own way too, I hope
she will be of comfort to Bob when the time comes. I know in my heart that
there will never be another Homer ob da West, or another Bob or a Miss Zoe
Jane for that matter. I am so frightened everyone at how bad this will be
when my Homer goes.
