Yes, dogs do grieve.  For example, many years ago we had a border collie mix and a rough collie.  They have been together for 10 years. (Aristotle, the border collie mix was 5 when we got Megan, the rough collie).  Aristotle had to be put down on January 1, 1992 due to cancer. Megan literally aged 10 years overnight:  she would not eat or sleep or do anything for almost 2 weeks. It got to the point where Mom got another dog to keep Megan company (which is how we ended up with Daisy, the Basset Hound).  Megan lasted for another year.
