Yes they do mourn.  Old old beagle/collie cross howled the whole night 
before my son got injured far away and I stayed for 10 days and consented to 
kidney transplant.
And when Dazey the basset died apollo the airedale was very mopey until Miss 
Becky arrived at which time he
had to keep moving cuz she loved him esp his heels.
And when he went Miss Becky slept on his sleeping spot for a week.
We saw him looking up in the clouds there was a cloud that looked like him 
racing across the sky. We saw it
for a year and then it quit.
