[Dailydrool] Walks

Based on our experience, I thought no two bassets ever walked at the same speed. Belvedere used to head out as if he had to get the most exercise in the shortest possible time. He was like a wind-up toy. Jane relaxed, took it slow, and laid down when she felt we had gone far enough, which was never very far. Then she'd become an immoveable object. So Drew would stay with her and coax her along, while I would move ahead with Bel. Abner also liked his walks slow, so he and Jane were a better match, but he always wanted to be with me, which made walks difficult. Somehow we managed, but the hounds never made it easy.

Now that Jane and Bel are serious seniors at thirteen and fourteen, they don't do much walking. We tend to stay very close to home, and they often stand at different sides of the compass, to make me stretch both arms out. It's so much fun having mama at the other end of the leash, at their beck and call.
