[Dailydrool] Basset Chests

There is no standard on the size of chests. The front--the sternum or prow
should stick out from between the legs. The standard, I believe, refers to
it as a "Prominent sternum". Sometimes if a Basset elbows out (as does
Nigel) it makes the chest appear larger than it is. Nigel looks like a tank
coming at you, big, wide, prominent chest and elbows out make him more wide
than he is (or should be.)
The key word is "Balance" If the dog is heavy through the shoulders and
light in the rear he will not look balanced, and maybe that is what you're
are seeing. "Elbows should be tucked tightly against the chest" is what the
standard says.
Also, 14" from the floor to the highest point of the shoulder (the withers)
is the standard height. Any dog over 15" is disqualified. Once in a great
while someone will complain to a Judge and request that another dog be
measured. Now and then the dog is actually over height. You have to be
pretty damn sure of it before you complain, however. I have shown a
few times against dogs I suspected were over 15" but have never said
anything because I do not know it for a fact.
