I don't know how it's happening with all of us voting several times a day
but the other rescue is about half a point ahead of us now. Please vote
every day for Basset Rescue Crew of the Southeast and the state is SC. Here

BaRCSE
sure can do a lot of good things for some hounds with that grand prize
money!

We have so many strange dogs come through our house that the Houndettes are
always up to date on their Bordetella vaccine. Jersey came to us with
kennel cough that she had picked up during her brief stint in the shelter
and it morphed into a terrible bacterial upper respiratory infection. We
honestly thought she was going to die. She sounded like someone had shoved
a garden hose up her nose and down into her lungs. Scared us half to death!
I'm not sure if Tybee had a very slight case of kennel cough when he came
to us but he came with a very slight cough and, before I knew it, everyone
here was coughing. No one got sick enough to go to the vet with and they
only coughed for about a week or so but it certainly made us sit up and
take notice. Unfortunately, the vaccine doesn't cover all the different
strains of that virus but it certainly is well worth getting for your dogs.

Tybee went in for a final check yesterday. To be very honest, it was more
for me than for him! I have been a little concerned because his limp is
still pretty bad and I just wanted to make sure all was as it should be and
it is. Of course, the little stinker made me feel pretty foolish because he
was walking better yesterday than he has since he's been with us but our
wonderful vet did x-rays to make sure (and didn't charge BaRCSE for
them!) and everything is healing perfectly. So it looks like we will have
to get serious about looking for a home for this wonderful guy. I wish we
lived on a farm or had more land instead of being in the middle of town so
I could keep all of my fosters but we don't and I can't. Our BaRCSE
adoption coordinator is terrific and seems to create perfect pairs when she
matches up a family with our BaRCSE hounds and I know she will work her
magic for Tybee. Someone is going to get a super wonderful hound when they
adopt this sweet boy!

I've noticed a lot of people on the list talk about trying to give their
hounds food when they've been vomiting and just wanted to mention what I
do. I actually don't give the Houndettes anything solid if they have some
sort of intestinal upset. I generally will give them clear beef or chicken
bullion and some water to make sure they don't become dehydrated but I
don't even try to give them anything solid until they haven't vomited for
at least eight hours. Then I go the chicken and rice route but only give
them minimal amounts with a good amount of time in between to make sure
they don't start vomiting again. I guess I kind of figure that maybe their
insides might need a rest. Maybe it's just dumb luck but it has always
worked except for one time when Shadow had an intestinal bug and had bloody
diarrhea. She started right out like that so I didn't get a chance to just
go the clear liquid route. Needless to say, we couldn't get to the vet fast
enough when she started doing that! I hope some of you folks who are more
experienced than the rest of us chime in here and tell us how you handle
something like this.

Heart healing drool mixed with prayers from me is being slung to all in
need. Especially to Kipper's family. It's so hard to lose a hound under
normal circumstances but their heartbreak is exceptional. We all do our
absolute best by our hounds and we knock ourselves out trying to keep them
safe and stuff still happens no matter what we do. Kipper was given the
wonderful gift of love and care for the time she was with her family. I
hope her family will concentrate on all the positve memories they have
of her instead of that final tragic incident.
