[Dailydrool] Barking dog

Dexter is barkier than most of the bassets that have become part of the Dashing Basset household. Mostly it happens when he's not happy with something--he's not being fed soon enough, because of the time change; I'm not paying attention; or food is on the way but not coming fast enough.

At some time I saw a Victoria Stillwell show in which she said to train the dog to bark, then let him know when the barking wasn't appropriate. Since I don't really want him barking, I think I have my own way of doing this. I ignore him when he barks, but when he's been quiet for about three seconds, I commend him with a "good dog." He's begun to learn not to bark, though he's not yet perfect. He's a smart fellow.

I have used the same sort of thing with our stubborn Holly, and she doesn't seem to get the idea. I think she just doesn't want to. Unfortunately, when my SIL was here a while ago, she kept laughing at Holly's barking for her dinner, so now Hol thinks it's funny to do it.

Never ever reward the barking, or it will not end.
Pam, food slave to the Dashing Bassets
