The first Christmas we had our first basset, Bubbles, the tree was knocked over three times and she stomped on it. She also ate all the wooden ornaments off of the tree. The second year we had two bassets, Bubbles and Bismark and Bubbles persisted in knocking over the tree and we persisted in putting up the tree. The third year we had three bassets and Bubbles still knocked over the tree--repeatedly. Then we moved. In the new house we set up the tree in the room Banshee ate in and rested by herself so she could be polite to everyone. She would never dream of knocking down her tree. The "original three" have long passed to the bridge. We have since converted that room into the basset bedroom and we do a small tree on top of the woodstove in the livingroom with a very elaborate manger scene on the mantle and everyone has stockings tied to the banister.

The second year Bubbles got into the garage, pulled a box off a shelving unit and got into all the replacement lightbulbs. I go outside and it looks like Bubbles and Bismark have done a poor job of hiding Easter Eggs. I gathered up all the C9 light bulbs, but I was missing 6. I searched everywhere. Some of the lightbulbs are missing all the paint, but still whole. I call the vet. The vet assures me that no dog would want to eat Chistmas light bulbs. I asked him how many hounds he had owned. The answer--none. I told him they ate the light bulbs, what did I need to do. I had to give them each half a loaf of Wonder bread and 2 Tablespoons of mineral oil. Fortunately everything did come out and didn't rip anything up. I called the skeptical vet and reported the colors to him once I knew. A basset will eat anything!
