[Dailydrool] slowing down and I'm back

I'm back after a couple of years, due to a divorce. He took the computer, I
took the hounds. Now it's just me and George (adopted from GABR) and Moose
(adopted from my local humane society), and a new computer. George is now 12
years old and Moose is about 10 or so. George was adopted 5 years ago,
ironically as a result of a divorce, he was placed in GABR and now he has
gone through his second divorce. It is very rare that a basset shows up at
our humane society but Moose did and I adopted him four years ago. He was a
stray so no birth date. The boys get along just like they were always
together. I lost my Paris, adopted from Basset Buddies (AKA Peggy Sue)
about two years ago. So, now it's just me and my boys. And we are doing just
fine. For slowing down, George has slowed down a lot in the last year or so.
Walking is like walking a turtle. He doesn't jump at all. I use pet steps
for them to use to get on my bed, and the couch. Pet steps really do help
them. George does sleep a lot too. He doesn't show much interest when we
meet other dogs, instead, just looks at me as if to say, I just want to go
home and go back to sleep. Moose is much more active, sleeps a lot too but
walks faster and shows puppy like behavior with other dogs. Perhaps Moose
isn't as old as I think. I look at them as old dogs which they are and
accept them and their behavior as such. I think bassets start slowing down
at different ages, Each basset is so different. I would suggest using pet
steps at all ages as to perhaps prevent back, joint injuries with jumping.
I'm happy to be back receiving the Drool. I've missed the posts from all of
you and tales of your bassets. Jerri, mom to George and Moose and at the
bridge: Fred, Barney, Molly, Paris, Winkie, and Mabel (the bunny killer).
