I am going to chime in on the weight issue too. With our first basset Pumbaa there were no weight issues at all, he was always incredibly lean and in fact wasn't a foodie basset really - loved his food completely, but there was no begging or stealing of any other food, and he wasn't in the slightest bit interested in scavenging. Morse is a totally different basset - food orientated is putting it mildly - and rarely a day goes past where he doesn't find something on a walk that needs to be taken away or gets consumed anyway in an explosion of eagerness. His weight has been about 72-75 lbs for the last few years now and I doubt we'll ever get it much lower, he is a very heavily boned boy as well and the rest of his family are similarly large. He always looks much bigger than he is as he has so much baggy skin (almost looks like a female who has had pups) but that's just him. I spoke to the vet about getting his weight down and he didn't feel we could get much more off him apart from the odd few pounds. When we have tried to seriously get him under 70 lbs his scavenging goes into major overdrive. We found the best weight-reducing regime was just a simple, low fat dog meat and green beans. It worked a treat, but I know not all bassets are bean lovers.
