 Laura,
    You should go get your new dog!!!  My grandfather always says you get the dog you were meant to have.  Bills will always be with us unless you are a Rockefeller!!!  I think this dog is not only good for you but certainly a gift from a soldier who never made it home.  What a gift to you and what a blessing to the deserving dog.  He may change your life in ways you can't imagine.  It is also good karma.  Jesus will put jewels in your crown as my grandmother would say.  You can always adopt a basset as well but I think you and this dog are meant to be.  How wonderful for both of you!  and your sweet daughter.
