Hi Trish,
Clueless momPerson here andI know about this one. All my dogs are rescues and
always have been. I foster too. I have little LuLu at present who is real
scared of strangers. No issues with dogs or kids but she doesn't trust full
grown people.
So we walk with Snoopy. Snoopy ahrooooooooooooooooooooo's at the top of his
lungs when he sees people or another dog. He loves people and he loves dogs and
he just wants to play. But, 99% of people and dogs cross that we don't know
cross the street at the first ahrooooo.
Last night I was walking both bassets when we were set upon by half a dozen kids
who love Snoopy. He got so excited ... he was just in his element while little
LuLu was at the very END of her leash staying away. Even the little 4 year old
came over and everybody was petting Snoopy and loving on Snoopy and I took my
eyes off of LuLu for just a second ..... and wouldn't you know it the biggest
kid (a teenager) snuck up behind her and pet her when she wasn't looking .....
well she just about jumped out of her skin ..... she lept up into the air and I
said REAL LOUD ... "LuLu do you feel AFRAID? Are you AFRAID LuLu .... mommy's
here ..... " And I grabbed her and hugged her and of course the kid had backed
up at the first mention that she had accidently scares LuLu and went back to
Snoopy who was playing the clown. All good. LuLu has mouthed a few people on
our walks that failed to heed Snoopy's ahroooooo ..... basically if you stop to
pet Snoopy then I will pet LuLu and as long as I am petting LuLu you can pet her
too .... she feels safe as long as my hands are in there.
In a nutshell I believe you can work with this and having another (braver) dog
helps a ton.
Good luck from the clueless momPerson who has the name for a reason btw .....
