Yesterday I had to take Loki in for a scheduled dental. He is only 4 and a half and this is his second dental- the boy just has crappy teeth. I also grabbed the first apt for Crackers annual "tune up". And let me say, all my bassets (11 over the past 35 years) love going to the vet. So I get out of the car and get well mannered Crackers out and then get Loki out of his travel crate (thinks he can drive if he is loose in the car). Loki immediately goes into full bark bark mode and drags me and Crackers to the door. Inside the receptionist asked if I wanted to keep Loki with me while Crackers had his exam and I said no to put him in the back. When Dr Robyn came into see Crackers, she said the whole place knew when Loki hit the front door. Good thing he is cute. I told Robyn that she could give him back to me a little loopy so I could get some peace. I picked him up that evening and he fell asleep in his crate and it is only a 15 minute drive. In the house he got on the recliner and for the first time in many months he did not try to get me up at 5 am.
Crackers exam went well and he actually "purred" while his ears were cleaned and his nails clipped. The staff loves this and everyone wants to be the one to sit on the floor with him rubbing his belly.
So I sympathize with those whose bassets hate it but honestly I have never had a problem. I think part of it is that the staff makes such a fuss over them, sit on the floor instead of making them stand on a stainless steel table, give lots of pets and babytalk before doing anything and of course, rewarding everything with a treat i,e., ear check = treat, tooth exam= treat, thermometer up butt=treat etc. You get the picture.
Kathy with Crackers (good to go for another 15,000 miles) Loki (look at my clean toofies) and Jordan (I had to stay home in my crate all day)
