I have been giving my three an anti-plaque water additive containing Xylitol
for well over a year now, and I have had absolutely no problem whatsoever.
I cannot taste the sweetness in the stuff right out of the bottle, and as
long as a person uses this stuff "as directed", I'm confident that it
doesn't pose a problem. It is mixed two measuring teaspoons of product to
one quart of water. It's very well diluted. This stuff was recommended to
me by a vet. I've seen the benefits that this particular product has had on
my dogs' teeth. It works particularly well. But, nothing replaces daily
brushing. I would think that if a dog got into a pack of sugarless gum that
contained Xylitol, there would be more of a problem because it's far, far
more concentrated. Or if one tried to use the product I use directly on a
dog's teeth without diluting, then perhaps, but mixed as directed, I have
not have a problem. My one dog, in particular, has a very bad tartar
problem, and this helps keep it in check.
