Yes, Gentian violet does stain.   Whenever the weather permits, I use it
outside and stand back.  When the weather is uncooperative, I do it inside
on the grooming table where I can have some measure of control over where it
will land.   I wear old (or dark) clothes and hold a towel in a shield
around/over the dogs head (not touching the head but to prevent the liquid
from hitting the walls).
