I want to thank the many who responded with suggestions regarding diet 
and food types for kidney problems. Turns out it isn't a kidney problem. 
I wasn't present at the initial examination, and my partner got confused 
(she tends to be in a panic mode at vet's) and when told to buy the 
kidney diet KD, apparently forgot whatever the vet had said and assumed 
kidney problems, when it turns out it's the liver.

The various home-made concoctions are interesting, and if only one or 
two dogs were involved, might be considered. Offhand, though, sounds as 
though it would be more expensive than even the very best kibble. And 
then there's the matter of 6 other house-dogs staring at me mournfully 
or accusingly when they smell what THAT dog is getting to eat compared 
to their plain kibble. Our dogs not only can count, they can hear the 
crunch of a biscuit being sneaked to someone even if they're 100 yards 
away -- though they can't hear us call them in if they're barking and 
chasing imaginary intruders.
