Tina:
It is my feeling that, in bassets, eye problems require an eye vet. Call me overreactive, if you must, but with a hound who has glaucoma, I err on the side of caution. Most regular vets do not have the background to diagnose and treat eye problems properly. And since bassets are prone to glaucoma and early treatment can make a difference, I'd go to an opthalmologist.

If it turns out not to be anything serious, you will know it, having been to the specialist. But it's unlikely that a regular vet can give you that peace of mind.

Of course, it may not be glaucoma. Our Belvedere suffered from another eye trouble. The opthamologist kept him in at least some vision until very close to the end of his life.
