As wise ol basset slave told me years ago to give my hounds Oat Bran, plain old Quaker Oats, Oat Bran.
 
I give my four hounds 1 tablespoon of oat bran mixed with a very little water  in their dinner.  I have been giving them oat bran for about 3 years and so far no problems.
