Today, Friday, has been a terrible day. Drew had oral surgery, so of course he's not feeling all that hot. And Jane stopped eating.
As you might remember, at her last ultrasound, Jane had spots on her spleen and liver. Her colon too was not happy and showed a lot of gas. Since then she has sometimes eaten her homemade food with joy and other times refused some of it. Yesterday she started saying no entirely to veggies. Today she threw up the one carrot I gave her. I didn't have the heart to make her eat more. Whenever I've tried to offer her food, she's turned her nose away.

When we spoke to the vet, she told us she could give Jane sub-Q fluids, but it would simply be a Band-Aid. She compared this to dealing with a hundred-year-old person. Either we go to a specialist, do more tests and so on, or we end the fight.

Because Jane's fourteen, we don't feel that we should take heroic measures; we could cause her a lot of suffering and gain so very little time. My feeling is that if cancer's in two spots, as it seems to be, it's already spreading. It's just a matter of where it will pop up next.

Jane is Drew's dog, though I usually do all the medical things for all our dogs. So he gets to make the awful decision that we know is coming. Today, he just can't make it, because he's all wrapped up in the surgery issue. Tomorrow, I think he'll be forced to make a choice.
Could you all please send prayers and drool in his direction. Jane is his baby, and this is going to be terrible for him. And of course, send plenty of drool in Jane's direction. She was our first hound and has an extremely special place in our hearts. The world will not be the same without her.
