[Dailydrool] Arrest Made in Case of Buddy the Basset

I'm wondering what the maximum penalty is under  California law for this 
guy setting Buddy on fire.   If he is 18 y.o.,  he is an adult and should not 
be treated as a child by the court.  Some  states have heavy penalties for 
harming an animal which can include jail time  and a substantial fine.

Can somebody familiar with California law let us  know what the maximum 
penalties are there?  Is there some way a letter  writing campaign to the 
District Attorney (or equivalent) can be started to put  on a little pressure?
