[Dailydrool] Parvovirus

The "new" Parvo is indeed out there and it is more vicious than the usual
strain. Reportedly, it has also affected dogs that have been fully
vaccinated and adult dogs, which makes it different from it's cousin. My
Vet had not heard much about it, but the dog lists are very aware. It hit
the Australian Shepherd Club of America National Specialty show in
Washington State and several dogs were affected and I believe, altho I may
be mistaken, that one died. Therefore, a show in Michigan hosted by the
ASCA was canceled. However, there have also been cases in other states--
some beagles pulled from a shelter by a rescue were affected.

The consensus among the Veterinary Medicine community seems to be that the
Parvo vaccine now available does keep the new virus from being as lethal as
is claimed. This is not to say it isn't deadly. It is very serious and the
only tools available to deal with it are supportive care-- fluids,
antibiotics, anti-emetics and anti-diarrheal drugs. Keep in mind that Parvo
is extremely contagious and is carried in feces. All you or your dog needs
to do is be where an affected dog has been. Dog parks, shows, training
classes are all places where your dog can pick up diseases. Rest stops are
terrible. Walk your dog someplace else if you are traveling, no matter how
nice the rest stop looks. Not everyone vaccinates.

Here is a link to an article in the San Francisco paper about it. It is
very helpful.
