Barbara - if you have been drawn to Lulu, then methinks Miss Ophelia has had a paw in this.  You are right; buppies almost always find homes but adult dogs, not so quickly.  I think you should definitely meet Lulu and then if you and she "choose" each other, then introduce her to your existing Basset in neutral territory and see what happens.
