[Dailydrool] On Different Opinions & Scritchy Itchy Hounds

Just wanted to say how much I, the Admiral, and my current foster hound,
Foxy, have all benefited from the differing viewpoints put forth in the
Drool by various members on various topics,

The lively and informed discussion helped me make truly informed decisions
about the Adm's ear gunk (official medical term)--decisions that I think
were critical to the sucessful resolution of the pestimonious pseudonomas
bacteria.

I very much appreciate the depth of experience shared, and (on all topics)
the way Droolers can put forth passionately held viewpoints for people like
me (a relative basset newbie) to learn from.

Speaking of "learn"--I now have the sweetest foster hound, Foxy (a 5 year
old ladyhound), and she has terrible skin allergies. I thought I had them
pretty much cleaned up over the past month by feeding her Honest Kitchen
brand food (switching every couple of days to Blue Buffalo fish-based
kibble--trying to give her variety) when, over the weekend, she totally
flaired up.

I am pretty sure I know what happened--Adm. and Foxy-lady got into a bag of
corn chips and gleefully hoovered them up. Within HOURS my Miss Foxy was
digging at herself. So I think it is likely she has an absolute corn
allergy.

I have been dosing her with benedryl and have her back on no corn, no
wheat, no soy, no icky anything (thank you, Honest Kitchen) food. Including
left over roast turkey (no additives of any kind).

Her skin has started to calm down, but does anyone have any other
suggestions to help ease her suffering? It is a terrible thing, this skin
allergy! I have never taken care of a dog with severe skin allergies! It is
so painful to see her suffer--and I know many Droolers have years of
experience combating itchy-scritchy hound skin.

I am taking her to the vet tomorrow, I'd rather avoid a prednisone shot or
related (but will do whatever it takes). Are there good meds I should seek
for Foxy? Does anyone have more wisdom for me??? I assume there is no magic
bullet or I would have read it in these pages.

Thank you all so much, Naval Drool to all in need.

PS to all fundraising people with websites--Honest Kitchen will soon
(within a month) roll out an affiliate program. Add the link to your
website and people who buy through it will also contribute to your efforts.
Keep an eye out for HK announcement.

Also, for everyone's info--Honest Kitchen is $10 off 7 and 10 pound boxes
this month, and there is a coupon for a free 4 ounce trial (everything
except the uber-pricey fish recipe) on the website to download. Not
flogging Honest Kitchen (although its done a great job with Miss Foxy),
just spreading the word on savings--and an opportunity to try it for free.
My hounds love the stuff. Basset Crack.
