First of all I would like to thank all my great friends on the drool who responded to my post about Barney not eating. My vet was getting very concerned because Barney was still loosing weight and just not eating. The next step was the feeding tube. The crazy thing was when we were making up his food he was very interested in what we were doing, leading me to believe he was really hungry. He just would not eat the Royal k-9 can or kibble or the hypoallergenic kibble or can. The vet asked what he had eaten lately
and I said he had date a bowl of cheerios . (I was eating cheerios for breakfast and Barney was looking at the bowl as if he wanted some, I gave him a small bowl and he set it all.) My vet then said feed him anything he will eat,as long as it is low on fat. I boiled chicken up and he chomped down eating all of it. We changed his food enhancer meds and I think that helped a lot. We attempted to add kibble or caned food to his menu but he would not touch it. We finally decided we would mix a concoction of rice, chicken, chicken berth and a little kibble in the vitamix . While adding the mixture I grabbed a handful of kibble and as I passed Barney dropped a kibble on the floor in front of him. As I dropped the kibble in the mixer I looked around and the kibble in front of Barney was gone. Marlene's post about hand feeding worked!! I grabbed a handful of kibble and he eat first one kibble at a time and before I knew not he had eaten 2/3 of a cup of kibble and he hasn't stopped!! He eats 3 times a day 1 cup of chicken, a cup of hypoallergenic
and Hills science diet prescription d/d duck and potato mix. It looks like he will settle on the duck kibble after the transition simply because he preferred it over the hypoallergenic food. His weight has gone from 33.1 to 33.8 in the pas week. Some weight was needed because if he was eating and not gaining any weight we were looking at something that we didn't want to think about.. the C word. I know this is long and probably rambling but I just wanted to update my drool family. You are all so awesome . Thank you all again for your advice and support.
