[Dailydrool] to heart worm or not to heart worm

I've fostered many heartworm positive bassets through their heartworm
treatments. The treatment is horrible and it leaves the basset very sick.
Activity must be severely limited for 4 weeks after treatment. Left
untreated, heartworms will damage internal organs.

My foster failure Matilda has lung/heart damage from the heartworms. After
her first heartworm treatment, Matilda was so ill that we feared we would
lose her. This could have been avoided if she was given heartworm
preventative.

My current foster Abel is scheduled for his heartworm treatment tomorrow
and Wednesday. My usual vet could not get the Immeticide for the treatment
(there's a shortage again) but luckily the rescue found a vet with the
meds. My sister and I are re-arranging our schedules so Abel will not be
alone much for a few days immediately following his treatment.

BTW my Matilda's life will probably be shorten because of the damage from
the heartworms not from a preventative. I've dealt with numerous vets
between our dogs and fosters. Each would tell you the heartworm
preventative benefits far outweigh the risks. After watching dogs struggle
immediately following their respective heartworm treatments, I will always
give my dogs their heartworm preventative.

Please say a prayer and/or send positive thoughts for Abel as he undergoes
his heartworm treatment.
