 Hi Marty,
Your vet can prescribe ear drops with prednisone and/or pain medicine in them.  He can also prescribe an oral anti inflammatory such a rimadyl--which works on tissue not just joints--prednisone for inflammation and itching--even antihistamines like Zyrtec and claritin will help with inflammation and itching--or trimodal can also help greatly with pain.  What does your vet say?  You might want to call him to make sure nothing is in his ear canal and to make sure he doesn't have a hematoma or something else going on.  If he was recently seen, I would just call the vet and describe the symptoms and see what he/she suggests.  If you feel this won't help ask a knowledgeable dog friend if they have a good vet to get a new perspective on the problem.
I hope this helps.  Let us know how your boy is doing!
