You have my sympathies.  We used to have to count our fingers as well.  We had some success with two methods.  Treat flat on hand as if basset was a horse.  Treat on spoon or fork.  Basset tries to grab fast and teeth hit metal.
Unfortunately I can see either method might be difficult when four dogs are involved!
I wonder if tongs would work?
