[Dailydrool] Sweet Potatoes, Signs, & Other Random Thoughts

Re: the thread on eating raw sweet potatoes... I plant sweet potatoes every
year. They are so easy to grow and delicious. Plus it is always a fun to
dig them up. Eli agrees. This past year, one of the vines grew out of the
garden into the main yard. (We have it fenced off because he loves his
veggies so much that we won't get any otherwise. Don't worry, we plant
things outside of the garden strictly for him.) Eli sniffed out a sweet
potato, dug it up, and ate it. He enjoyed it very much.

Debbie's story of the penny from Elder Clara reminded me of a sign that I
got from my sweet Noah. Noah was my first basset. I decided I wanted a
basset after I met a sweet, shy basset when I went to geology field camp in
New Mexico during college. I also decided after that trip that I wanted to
go to grad school in NM. Two years later and living in Albuquerque, I
adopted Noah from Basset Hound Rescue of NM. He was found by a hiker in
the Sandia Mts. He was skinny, with bite marks on his back side, and a too
small collar. We lived in NM for 2 years after that, and Noah was my
constant companion whether I was doing field work in the bosque, hiking the
Sandias, or visiting Chaco Canyon. He was always ready for an adventure,
so he was happy to hop in the car and hit the open road when I finished
school and moved back to South Carolina. Eight years and many more
adventures later, Noah left for the rainbow bridge. After Noah died, my
mother made a donation to CBHR in his memory. One month to the day after
he died, I got a letter from them acknowledging the donation. I read the
note and cried, missing my sweet boy. I put the letter back in the
envelope and then I noticed the stamp. It was a New Mexico stamp. New
Mexico... the place I found my heart, my Noah. I have no doubt that he was
telling me he was okay.

Random thoughts... Eli is microchipped through 24 Pet Watch. I logged into
my account tonight to make sure that all the information was correct, and I
noticed that you can add a picture of your pet. I wasn't able to register
his chip when I initially set up my account, because he was registered to
the rescue and I had to mail in a form transferring ownership. So I don't
know if adding a photo has always been an option or not, but I just noticed
it. I would guess the other microchip companies have a similar option. If
you haven't checked your pup's info in a while, log in and make sure it's
up to date and add a photo. The photo I added of Eli clearly shows his
microchip tag and ID number. It might come in handy, you never know. The
other thing I noticed when I was doing all this is that on the microchip
website it said call 24 Pet Watch as soon as your pet is missing. Of
course, right? But do you carry that information with you all the time?
Maybe. Do you carry your cell phone with you? Probably. I programmed
the microchip company's phone number into my cell and added Eli's microchip
ID number under the contact notes. I hope I'll never need it, but if I do,
at least I can get to it quickly.

Okay last thing... Eli walked with BaRCSE in his first St. Patrick's Day
Parade, and he did great with the crowds and noise. He has come a long way
from the crazy, leash pulling, squirrel chasing, barking walker he was when
we first got him. We are so proud of him!
