Four years ago Droopy Basset Hound took in a 6 year old female named Sally Ann..The transporters who brought her to me said they felt she had a UTI since they had to make so many pit stops..Sally was staying at my house overnight until she could go to her foster home the next day..the following day was a Monday and she already had a vet appointment...Sunday morning I took her out and she did not make it to the grass...this was a blessing as all that came out was blood and pus. I immediately took her to the emergency vet and X-rays showed a bladder absolutely jammed full of bladder stones. The vet said Sally needed surgery right away as her kidneys were showing signs of failure....I called my vet at home on Sunday (bet he’s sorry I have his home number) and he agreed to do surgery first thing Monday. They removed a plastic zip-lock bag of stones from her bladder....Some of the stones were as big a small robin eggs....many were very smooth like you would find on a creek bed. About 100 stones all sizes and shapes were taken. Lots of them were small and jagged. Sally stayed with me and I have had her urine checked every 6 months....When the infection is present it is raging e coli. Antibiotics until the infection is gone, but she is on 2 cranberry pills every day and Proin twice a day. She has such a thick bladder from all the scarring that she can’t feel when her bladder is full...I take her out immediately when she wakes up from naps and keep Resolve and a Bissell Spot bot machine out all the time. The cranberry pills and Proin have helped tremendously but it will be a problem for her forever. She is healthy otherwise and a sweetheart..She is high maintenance but if you know she has this going on you can work it into a bit of a schedule. She has accidents in her crate within a half hour sometimes so when I leave I put her in the 1 room that I have tile on the floor...But daily medication with cranberry and Proin 50mg. has made a major difference. Frustrating yes but I wouldn’t trade her for anything. Ask your vet about Proin 50mg and cranberry...Could help....
