[Dailydrool] Benny

Sounds like it could be a parasite called 'Giardia,' I work at an animal
hospital and we had a few dogs come in this past week with the same
symptoms. Did you take a fecal sample to the vet?

It has been some time since the Moderator list has been updated. Over the
last couple of years there have been some changes to ?personnel? ? This link
will take you to an updated list and how to contact mods if you need to.

http://lists.dailydrool.org/listinfo.cgi/dailydrool-dailydrool.org

Melissa Jokela worked through quite the technical jungle to get this list
updated-Thank you! ( Melissa and hubby Alex not only do the grunt work of
keeping the dailydrool digest running- they also donate the cost of the
server). The list should be completely updated within a day.

Your current cast for moderators are:

Sandy Gaston, Suz Green, Norma Whelan, Sandi Wittenberg, Marion Billy,
Angelika Hastings , Kay Jordan and Bev Szaton.

Our collective hats off to Drool Mom Nancy Gallagher who ran this list for
10 years by herself before retiring from that duty ( goodness it?s been
almost that long again since then I think). She still runs the
www.dailydrool.com website. If it weren?t for her- none of us would be here
now.

Now back to Drooling...

Just wondering if anyone out there has any experience in using Prozac with
their hound, especially when it comes to choosing Prozac vs Anipryl.

To keep it super simple, we bought a two story house a year ago. My Flash
is 14 and frankly, around two years longer than I thought he'd be. I'm
certainly happy he's still here, but the poor guy is not adjusting well to
the house and doesn't like sleeping "alone." For the past year, he'll wake
up overnight and bark because he's confused and scared and alone. This past
week, that changed to every HOUR overnight.

He's mostly blind and definitely experiencing symptoms of canine senility.

So the vet told us we could do Prozac or Anipryl, but suggested we start
with the Prozac for a month to see if it helps him.

I was just curious what others experiences were in this situation. Poor guy
is just old and losing it and I want to make him as comfortable as
possible.

Thanks
Nicole

Our Phoebe (grand dog basset hound) was rescued from a county animal
shelter and in a state of complete terror when she came to live with our
family. Any sudden movements, sudden or loud noise (i.e. someone putting
a coffee cup on a table) overhead movement(Like ceiling fans), anything
black (like a dark box sitting on a shelf etc) that was higher than her,
being left alone ...all brought on excessive whimpering, barking, peeing
etc.
After a half dozen sessions with a trainer and multiple visits and exams
for health issues...it finally came down to Prozac. She was put on 50 mg a
day(according to her weight).
The vet writes a script and it was refillable at the local grocery store.
It made a world of difference. She now lives with my daughter and husband
and 5 month old grandbaby, Sammy. Sammy's crying, his collection of
noise-making swings, bouncy seats, toys that make sounds don't seem to
phase her...she does bark at the doorbell and takes her nap next to Sammy's
crib. She is now estimated to be about 12 yrs old.
In 2012 She journeyed several hundred miles with me and Rudy and Izzy
Vogel and Auntie Beth to the Great American Waddle at Canterbury Village
stayed in a hotel, rode an elevator, went to the picnic and Pawction,
waddled in the parade, wore a hat and had pictures taken. Took it all in
her stride.
If the vet doctor is on board...it's worth a try.

Had a delightful breakfast with Mary Ann Thomas this morning downtown in
Chicago. What a charming person!! I was so delighted to get to meet another
Drooler in person and MaryAnn in particular.
Plus, if she hadn't seen me I would still be wandering around downtown
looking for Portnoy's or whatever that was--PotBelly's. I hope she had as
good a time as I did, and thanks for breakfast, MaryAnn!!!

Nicole,
we are in exactly the same place with our Bo, who is exhibiting exactly
the same symptoms (and is also mostly blind). He is on 30 mg. of Prozac and
5 mg. of Valium nightly, and has both his good nights and his bad nights
(about a 50/50 ratio.)we haven't tried Anapryl yet.Please keep us in the
loop on how it goes for you. Bo weighs 54 pounds. Val, Bo, and Harley.

Ben is not up to par, lately. He gave me problems eating on Sunday and
then threw up Monday morning, no food but just yellow bile. He did not
want
to eat anything, PERIOD. Called the vet and got some anti-nausea meds and
boiled some chicken. Struggled to get anything in him. This morning some
of the same, but did scramble an egg for him and got some chicken in him.
Took him for a walk and some nasty diarrhea came out. Later in the morning

he needed to go out, and more of the same. Took a sample of it and called
the vet. Took Ben in, and they took blood for all sort of tests. Vet
gave some anti-diarrhea meds and came home. Took some of the chicken to
him,
and he did not want it. Then I put some cheese spread on it and he did eat

it. For dinner, no interest in beef or chicken until I put a cheese sauce
on it. I to not know. He is also a bit lethargic, does not follow me
around as much. He just sits on his chair a lot more. I should have the
test
results tomorrow.

It's still available!! The dedication is to Elder Clara and there is a ton
of pictures of Drool Bassets and it's a neat way to teach the ABC's and
counting to ten for kids.
All proceeds go to three rescues that were chosen. One is Senior Hounds
Abound! Buy a book and support rescue!!!

Books can be ordered at: https://sites.google.com/site/abcbassets/

Those who have bought it absolutely love it!!!

I see we did NOT win the Shelter Challenge $1000 Prize for the Bassets of
Wisconsin but I DO see that we DID win them 100 Free Vaccinations. I think
we tried very hard on this and I am proud that we at least won SOMETHING for
our Basset friends. Thank you to all the Droolers that worked so hard on

Is there anyone on the drool that makes fleece snoods for bassets? Maggie
is getting a little frail in her older age and we have brutal winters in
North Dakota, so I would really like something to help keep her warmer.

Hi it's Snoopy,
?
I am sorry to hear Ben is under the weather.? When I puke up the yellow
stuff my momPerson gives me pepsid because the vet told her that yellow
stuff is acid from the stomach and it will just keep coming up until you
give pepsid.? Stuff coming out the other end gets immodium from the clueless
momPerson.
?
It sounds like poor Ben has a stomach bug which of course is not to be taken
lightly, we are glad you called the vet, obviously Ben has a very smart and
devoted dadPerson.? We are very sorry to hear he has a tummy ache at our
house and are drooling for him.? We interrupted our morning nap specifically
to drool for Ben that he feels better and wants some rice and boiled
hamburger (thats what we get when we have a cruddy tummy).
?
More later from Snoopy who is looking forward to hearing that Ben feels
better.
with LuLu who can really drool and Gracie who is really just the dickens but
she does try.

Below is the note our BaRCSE president (Kim Bouchey) sent to the group
today. All I can say is there is a special place in heaven for you folks
who foster. You open your homes and hearts to these unwanted hounds to give
them a second chance and sometimes have your hearts broken. The family who
has been fostering Boudreaux is very special and gave this sweet boy more
love in the few months he's had with them than he'd ever had before. Many
thanks to all of you who helped support BaRCSE in our care of Boudreaux.

I am sad to send this email
But Dottie wanted everyone to know that sweet Boudreaux lost his fight with
cancer today. She helped him to the bridge this morning so he is running
free with all of our other beloved bassets who are at the bridge.

Dottie and Don were amazing with this sweet boy ( along with the Ratboyz)
in making him a part of their family! They gave him the love and attention
he deserved and showed him what being a part of a family was.

Jane, can you post on the Daily Drool and let everyone who was so
supportive know. That is really important to Dottie but she wasn't up to
the task.

Interesting research being done on various dog harnesses during vehicle
crashes.

http://www.sfgate.com/news/us/article/Crash-tests-use-Center-for-Pet-Safety-
s-dummy-dogs-4900402.php

Here is the only harness tested out of seven that protected all the dummies
in 30 mph crashes. The rest had hardware problems, construction issues,
connection point failures, the stitching broke or there was catastrophic
failure and the dog flew off the seat or out of the harnes

http://sleepypod.com/clickit

http://inventorspot.com/articles/sleepypod_clickit_harness_rated_safest_car_

Should be interesting when they start testing crates, lifejackets, etc. I
am pleased to see someone is finally conducting this valuable research.

Hi everyone, it's LuLu,
?
Today the clueless momPerson decided to take Gracie and I to the dog park at
lunch time.? She is a racist and she thinks the dog park should not be open
to all canines, only dogs.? She doesn't like it when wolves show up, and
neither does Snoopy.? Well, Snoopy wasn't there and so when Sky and Timber
(full blooded wolves) showed up their mommy released them into the park.?
Gracie went over there and play bowed them and then she ahrooooo roooo
roooo'd Sky but he doesn't play much, he is already 11.? The clueless
momPerson is predisposed to not trust Sky and Timber because she is
clueless.? She likes Terry Sue though, who is Sky and Timbers mommy.
?
So there we were, Terry Sue and momPerson and me (I am momPerson's shadow)
.... when Sky came over for a sniff.? Sky is an unaltered male wolf, about
85 lbs.? And he thinks he is in charge.? Well ........ he has got another
thing coming he is not in charge, I am in charge, everyone knows that and he
and I have discussed this before?and he failed to show me the proper respect
and when he shoved his snooter up my you know what and left it there too
long?I whipped around and I gave Sky what for!? Right now!!? And Sky
apologized and backed off.? And momPerson practically had to check her purse
for fresh underwear and Terry Sue was just laughing at the clueless
momPerson and she said "Dale, Sky is NOT going to go after LuLu, LuLu is
just putting him in his place, he knows she'll put him on his back if he
doesn't back down."
?
The clueless momPerson remains just that, clueless.
